African American Military History Museum to Honor Veterans During Annual Veterans Open House on November 4, 2026
2026 Alvin Eaton Champion Award to Be Presented During Celebration
The African American Military History Museum invites veterans, their families, and the community to join in a special celebration of service, sacrifice, and patriotism during its Annual Veterans Open House on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
This annual tradition provides an opportunity for the community to come together to express gratitude to the brave men and women who have worn our nation's uniform while recognizing those who continue to make a difference in the lives of veterans.
A highlight of the event will be the presentation of the 2026 Alvin Eaton Champion Award at 11:30 a.m. This prestigious recognition honors an individual or organization whose extraordinary commitment to veterans reflects a genuine spirit of service, compassion, and dedication to those who have served our country.
The award is named in honor of Staff Sergeant Alvin Eaton, a United States Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, whose passion for preserving military history and honoring veterans helped shape one of Hattiesburg's most treasured historical landmarks. Eaton played an instrumental role in the restoration of the historic East Sixth Street USO building, which today serves as the home of the African American Military History Museum.
“Through his efforts, a significant piece of Hattiesburg's military and African American history was preserved, ensuring that the stories, contributions, and sacrifices of generations of service members would continue to be shared with future generations,” said Latoya Norman, Director of Museums. “The award bearing his name celebrates individuals and organizations that carry forward his remarkable legacy of service.”
The Veterans Open House will offer a welcoming atmosphere for veterans of all military branches and generations to reconnect, share experiences, and enjoy the appreciation of a grateful community. Light refreshments will be served, and every veteran in attendance will receive a special token of appreciation in recognition of their service.
The event is free and open to the public, with guests welcome to stop by at any time between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
